USA Rugby Continuing Ed. Program

In an effort to provide coaches with ongoing educational opportunities, the USA Rugby Coach Development Program (CDP) has launched a continuing education program.

CE requirements are meant to ensure that individuals stay current in their knowledge of coaching rugby. The purpose of the requirements is to encourage coaches to:

*Master new coaching skills and techniques
*Obtain current professional development information
*Explore new knowledge in specific content areas
*Expand approaches to effective coaching
*Further develop professional judgment
*Improve rugby in the USA

About the Program

Coaches who hold a current USA Rugby coach certification will be able to extend the life of their certification by participating in various coach education events. The continuing education and currency program will be unit based. Coaches can participate in various events that will be worth 5, 4, or 1 unit/s. To extend their current certification by one additional year, coaches should earn 10 continuing education units while their certification is still current. To continue to remain current, coaches will need to earn 10 CEUs each year thereafter.

If the coach does not participate in any continuing education and the certification expires then the coach will need to take another certification course (Introducing Rugby or Developing Rugby Skills) for a new certificate lasting three years.

To submit your CEUs click on the "Forms" link at the top of this page.

Certification Equivalency

USA Rugby will recognize International Rugby Board (IRB) and Rugby Football Union (RFU) certification as equivalent:

· Level I to Introducing Rugby
· Level II to Developing Rugby Skills
· Level III to Advanced Coaching Course (ACC)

The new certification will expire at the same time as the original certification OR three years from the issue date, whichever comes first. Coaches seeking equivalency must submit a request form

Certification Renewal (valid for 3 years)

A coach may attend any CDP workshop and complete all corresponding online requirements (Introducing Rugby, Developing Rugby Skills, or ACC) to obtain an automatic 3-year renewal of certification.

If certification expires a coach will need to retake the entire course.

Continuing Education Tracking

To receive Continuing Education Units coaches must fill out an online form corresponding to the units earned. Continuing education units will only be credited when the CDP staff receives this form. Once received, the CDP staff will notify the coach of the continuing education units awarded. Coaches are responsible for submitting and keeping track of their own CEUs. Coaches must have proof of attendance or be able to demonstrate knowledge of the attended event.

At each USA Rugby HOSTED event, participants will be asked to sign in and will receive a voucher that is receipt and proof of attendance. The CDP staff will record attendance and maintain a certification database but responsibility for currency fall on the coach. Participants will only need to present their voucher if there is a question about their attendance at an event. Once coaches earn 10 continuing education units, the CDP staff will send an updated certificate that includes a new certification expiration date. Coaches may petition for points that have occurred since January 1st, 2006. No CEUs will be accepted pre-2006.

FAQ's

Q: How do I submit my CEUs for credit?
A: Coaches should fill out the appropriate form on the USA Rugby website – USA Rugby HOSTED events (5 units), USA Rugby APPROVED events (4 units), or USA Rugby OTHER events (1 unit)

Q: Who is responsible for tracking continuing education units?
A: The coach is responsible for keeping track of their own units and certification expiration date.

Q: How long is a USA Rugby Certification valid?
A: USA Rugby Certification is valid for three years. A coach may earn 10 units for a one year extension of their original certification date (e.g. Joe Coach receives his initial certification in 2008 which is valid until 2011. In 2009, he completes 10 continuing education units and extends his certification expiration date to 2012).

Q: I have a certification from another country, what is the USA Rugby equivalent?
A: International Rugby Board (IRB) and Rugby Football Union (RFU) certifications are equivalent to the following:

· Level I to Introducing Rugby
· Level II to Developing Rugby Skills
· Level III to Advanced Coaching Course (ACC)

Q: What if a coach never received or lost the proof of attendance voucher or receipt?
A: Submit the CEU form as usual but select the option that states the proof of attendance was “lost/destroyed or never received”. The coach will also need to provide a short summary of the event and the learning that took place. The CDP may request more information if necessary.

Q: What if a coach earns 15 or 20 continuing education units during the three year certification?
A: If a coach earns 20 units during the three year certification, the certification expiration will be adjusted accordingly—two years added to the life of the certification. If a coach earns 15 units during the three year certification, one year will be added to the life of the certification and the coach will have five units towards another year of certification currency.

Q: What if a coach attends a coach education event that is not listed on the continuing education events list?
A: This coach will need to fill out the ‘other’ portion of the appropriate form and provide a short written summary of the event and the learning that took place. Upon receipt of this short summary, the coach would be awarded the appropriate number of units—either four units or one unit.

Q: Will continuing education units be awarded to coaches who have attended past events?
A: Yes. Coaches who have already attended coaching events from 2006 to present will be awarded the corresponding units. Please use the online submission form. Once received, the CDP staff will notify the coach of the units awarded.
