The Potomac Rugby Union, or the PRU, is the governing body for all rugby in northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, and parts of Pennsylvania. This means the PRU is responsible for competitions at all levels (except where we have voluntarily given over certain competitions to the Mid-Atlantic RFU, our parent territorial union), all star teams, assisting clubs with admin matters, running coaching and player clinics, and disciplinary matters.

The PRU is known as a local area union (or LAU in the parlance of USA Rugby), the smallest subdivision of the national governing body. The Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU, for short) is one of seven territorial unions (or TU) of USA Rugby. MARFU comprises the PRU, Virginia Rugby Union (VRU), and Eastern Penn Rugby Union (EPRU).

The PRU is comprised of all member clubs in our jurisdiction. Any club not a member of the PRU or some other LAU or who is not an at-large member of USA Rugby is a "rogue" club. Our members are not allowed to play against rogue clubs. It is to everyone's great advantage to be a regular member of an LAU.

The PRU's member clubs are in eight different gender and age groups - senior men, senior women, college men, college women, high school boys, high school girls, youth, and old boys/girls. At present, only the senior and college clubs pay dues and have a vote at PRU meetings. (See list of voting members. Only full members have a vote, one per club.) The high school clubs receives administrative funds from the PRU, while the youth clubs don't exact any costs and receive little funding. The PRU meets four times per year to conduct business.
